Coastal Carolina baseball will indeed participate in the NCAA tournament after some speculation late in the season.
With head coach Gary Gilmore in charge, the Chanticleers will play Vanderbilt at noon Friday in the Clemson Regional.
On the other side of the bracket, Clemson, the region host and overall No. 6 seed, will face High Point.
It is Head Coach Gary Gilmore’s 29th and final season at the helm of the Chants after the team was eliminated from the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Thursday.
Clemson’s website indicates that all-session tickets will go on sale at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, with single-session tickets going on sale Friday. ESPN+ will broadcast the first games of the regional as well.
Coastal Carolina baseball under Gilmore
Gary Gilmore’s tenure as head baseball coach at Coastal Carolina is drawing to a close after nearly three decades, almost 1,100 wins, and one all-time legendary Men’s College World Series title run.
As a 66-year-old, he cannot imagine his life without teal. Chanticleer baseball — heck, the entire university — could never have existed had Gilmore never graced the skipper’s end of the dugout in Conway, South Carolina. No one who has paid even the slightest attention to the school on South Carolina’s Grand Strand dares to imagine where it would be.
In 1997, the Chants made their first NCAA baseball tournament appearance four years before the coach led the team. In the past 22 completed seasons, they have made 18 postseason visits. It took nearly two decades for Coastal to rewrite Omaha’s history and hearts with its 2016 dogpile win over baseball blue-blood Arizona in the MCWS.
Gilmore retires at the end of this tournament.
